This super cute origami umbrella looks similar to a real umbrella. It has several important parts: the umbrella cover, the umbrella ribs, and the handle. A tassel pendant at the bottom makes it look even cuter and more elegant.

You can make umbrellas of different sizes, and using patterned paper will make them even more special. Since there are many repetitive folds, resilient paper is a must in case it gets holes during the making process.

Material

Prepare three pieces of 15ร—15 cm origami square paper to create a 16ร—11 cm origami umbrella.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Take one piece of paper, place it with the desired display side facing down, fold it in half horizontally, leaving a crease, and unfold it.

Fold it in half vertically, and unfold it.

Step 2

Flip the paper from left to right.

Step 3

Fold the bottom right edge to align with the top left edge, and unfold it.

Fold the bottom left edge to align with the top right edge, and unfold it.

Step 4

Mountain fold the left and right creases and bring the left, right, and top points to meet the bottom point. Flatten the fold to get a small square.

Step 5

Fold the top left and right edges of the top layer to align with the vertical crease, crease them well, and unfold them.

Step 6

Lift the top layer on the right side along the vertical crease, open and squash it, then fold this resulting layer in half vertically from left to right.

Repeat this for the left side.

Lift the top layer on the left side along the vertical crease, open and squash it, then fold this resulting layer in half vertically from right to left.

Step 7

Flip the paper from left to right, then fold the top left and right edges to align with the vertical crease, crease them well, and unfold them.

Step 8

As you did in step 6, lift the top layer on the right side along the vertical crease, open and squash it, then fold this resulting layer in half vertically from left to right.

Lift the top layer on the left side along the vertical crease, open and squash it, then fold this resulting layer in half vertically from right to left.

Step 9

Fold the top left and right edges of the top layer to align with the vertical crease, crease them well, and unfold them.

Step 10

Lift the top layer on the right side along the vertical crease, open and squash it, then fold this resulting layer in half vertically from left to right.

Lift the top layer on the left side along the vertical crease, open and squash it, then fold this resulting layer in half vertically from right to left.

Step 11

Rotate the paper 90 degrees from front to back, and repeat step 10 for the other three sides, then rotate it back.

Step 12

Fold top two layers on the right side to the left side along the vertical crease, then turn over the paper and fold the top two layers on the right side to the left side.

Cut it as the following pictures show.

Step 14

Fold and unfold the top part once along the black dotted lines to the lower left and lower right, respectively.

Flip the paper from left to right.

Similarly, fold and unfold the top part once along the black dotted lines to the lower left and lower right, respectively.

Step 15

Expand the paper completely, press down the center point, and turn it over.

We can see that there are many folds on this paper. Mountain fold the three creases belong to one of the folds, shown by the red dotted lines. Then, fold the same three creases of another fold. Finally, bring the two mountain folds located at the outer edges of the paper together, as illustrated in the third image.

Mountain fold the creases indicated by the red dotted lines, and valley fold the creases indicated by the black dotted lines, then repeat the above steps for the other folds. Finally, rotate the paper 90m degrees from left to right and expand it.

Step 17

Fold another piece of paper in the same manner above.

Step 18

Turn over the left model from left to right and press down the right model’s center point to lift its edges naturally.

Step 19

Apply glue around the edge of the left model. Turn over the right paper, and assemble them.

Step 20

Fold the valley fold points on the edge a little toward the center. Turn over the paper.

Step 21

Take out the last piece of paper, fold up the bottom edge a little, and unfold it.

Fold up the bottom edge along the dotted line, leaving a crease, and unfold it.

Fold the paper in half vertically, leaving a short crease as the black dotted line shows, and unfold it.

Cut the paper along the creases indicated by the dotted lines.

Step 22

Take out the paper marked number 1, roll it up from the bottom point, and apply glue on the top point to secure this paper stick well.

Step 23

Rotate the main part of the umbrella 90 degrees from back to front, and cut the bottom point of this part a little to get a hole.

Step 24

Insert the paper stick into the hole you just cut. Then, cut a hole at the top and push the paper stick upward so a small part remains exposed.

You can adjust the size of the two holes to fit the diameter of the stick.

Step 25

Take out one of the small rectangular pieces of paper we marked number 2, and wrap the top exposed section of the stick with this paper. Cut the extra part.

Step 26

Then, wrap another piece of number 2 paper around the stick where it joins the lower part of the umbrella.

Step 27

Take out the number 3 paper, fold the left edge toward the right side along the dotted line, and unfold it.

Cut the right part into fringe, and cut the paper along the vertical dotted line.

Fold one of the tassels on the right side to the left, apply glue to the upper left corner of the paper, and roll up the paper horizontally.

Step 28

Wrap the bottom of the umbrella handle and the tassel with paper.

Now you have completed your origami umbrella.

You can make an easy origami maple leaf and then place it on top of your umbrella, just like you are walking in the park in the fall with your umbrella, and the maple leaf drifts down with the wind on top of your umbrella, what a romantic scene.
