This origami sofa is a combined origami tutorial in which we will make the frame firstly and then the back Back cushions and arm resting. To make it more comfortable, we also include two throw pillows in the step by step instruction.

The whole sofa is made by two pieces of origami papers. So you can simply use the same color or try to make some combination like we did in the demonstration. Although it looks complex, the folding steps are quite easy and you can finish it with your children. Let’s get started to turn papers into a cozy sofa.

Material

Prepare two pieces of 15cm x 15cm paper to create an 11.25cm x 5.6cm origami sofa. You can use any color of paper to make this.

Step by Step Instructions

Origami Sofa Frame

Step 1

Place the paper with the desired display side facing down to begin folding. Fold it in half horizontally, leaving a crease, and unfold it.

Fold it in half vertically, and unfold it.

Step 2

Fold the top and bottom points to meet the center intersection point, and unfold them.

Step 3

Fold the top and bottom points along the dotted lines to meet the intersection points on the top and bottom sides separately. Then, fold the top and bottom edges to align with the middle horizontal crease.

Step 4

Fold the top and bottom edges to align with the middle horizontal crease, leaving two creases, and unfold them.

Step 5

Fold the left and right points along the dotted lines.

Step 6

Fold the left and right edges along the black dotted lines so that the two red dots meet. Crease them well, and unfold them.

Step 7

Unfold the left and right triangles, then turn over the paper from front to back.

Step 8

Create four valley creases indicated by the four dotted lines.

Flip the paper over from front to back.

Step 10

Bring up the top and bottom edges and push the four corners toward the center based on the four mountain fold creases indicated by the red dotted lines, then lift the left and right points.

Press down the left and right layers to form a box.

Step 11

Make another box in the same manner above.

Step 12

To assemble these two boxes, stack one on top of the other and secure them together.

Prepare Papers for Origami Sofa Backrest and Pillow

Step 1

These are the sizes of paper you need to make a sofa backrest and pillow. You can cut directly according to the corresponding sizes. If you don’t have a ruler, you can fold and cut following the steps below.

Step 2

Take out another 15cm x 15cm piece of paper, fold it in half horizontally, and unfold it.

Step 3

Fold the bottom edge to align with the middle horizontal crease, and unfold it.

Step 4

Fold the paper in half vertically, leaving a crease indicated by the dotted line, and unfold it.

Step 5

As shown in picture 1, fold a vertical crease along the length of the box, as shown by the dotted line. Finally, cut the paper according to these creases, and the small five sheets marked with numbers are the ones used to make the backrests and pillows.

Origami Sofa Backrest

Step 1

Insert a piece of the slightly larger paper you just cut into the gap at the top of the box, and insert a piece of slightly smaller paper on the left and right sides..

Insert the other ends of the three pieces of paper into the gap to form the backrest and armrests of the sofa.

Origami Sofa Pillow

Step 1

Take paper 2.3, roll it from both ends and glue it to form a roll.

Shape it into a pillow as shown below, by pressing each side along the curved red dotted lines.

Step 3

Fold another pillow with paper 2.4 in the same manner.

Step 1

Place these pillows on the sofa.
