Birthday cake is the most important element for a birthday. Have you ever think about making a paper paper birthday cake with steps of folding.
You will be amazed how beautiful this origami birthday cake is. As it is a combined craft, we will fold the cake along with the buttercream decorations, then make lovely candle, decorative flowers and the birthday greeting card.
The color combination of all those materials is the key for the final appearance. The main part of the cake is made from 5 pieces of paper. You may choose to combine 2 colors or even 5 ones into it.
My personal suggestion is to use 2 companion colors or 3 similar colors.
Be creative with the decorations too. Paper flowers, paper animals or some other lovely decorative elements like the lucky stars can be used on top of this origami birthday cake.

Material
- Prepare 5 pieces of 15×15 cm origami square paper for the cake part;
- 2 pieces of 15×15 cm origami square green paper for the leaves;
- 3 pieces of 7.5×7.5cm origami square paper for the candle;
- 3 pieces of 7.5×7.5cm origami square paper for the flowers;
- 1 piece of 7.5×7.5cm origami square paper for the birthday card.
In total, you need 7 sheets of 15×15 cm paper and 7 sheets of 7.5×7.5cm paper (one sheet of 15×15 cm paper can be cut into 4 sheets of 7.5×7.5cm paper)
Step by Step Instructions – Main Cake Part
Step 1
Place the paper with the desired display color side down to begin folding, fold it in half horizontally and vertically once each, and unfold it to get two creases.
Step 2
Fold it in half diagonally from both sides and unfold it.
Step 3
Fold the top and bottom edges to align with the middle horizontal crease.
Step 4
Fold the left and right edges to align with the vertical crease, crease them well, and unfold them.
Step 5
Fold the bottom edge to align with the vertical crease on the left side, and unfold it. Then, fold the bottom edge to align with the vertical crease on the right side, and unfold it.
Step 6
Open the right opening based on the two diagonal creases indicated by the dotted lines [picture 1], then flatten this pocket and fold the top and bottom corners toward the right side along the dotted lines [pictures 2 to 4].
Step 7
Repeat this for the left side.
Open the left opening based on the two diagonal creases indicated by the dotted lines [picture 1], then flatten this pocket and fold the top and bottom corners toward the left side along the dotted lines [pictures 2 to 4].
Step 8
Lift the four flaps, then open and squash them.
Step 9
Fold the two edges of the four small squares adjacent to the center of the paper to align with their center lines, and then unfold them.
Step 10
Focus on the top left small square, mountain fold the two creases you made in the previous step, then lift its upper layer and fold it up along the dotted line, and finally, flatten the fold to close the pocket.
Repeat this for the other three small squares.
Step 11
Flip the paper over from left to right.
Step 12
Fold the four corners of the upper square toward the center, then unfold them by 90 degrees to make them stand up.
Step 13
Open the openings on both sides of the top left standing triangle, then put your fingers into the two openings, and press them down, and finally press its top point to make it into a shape like a canoe.
Repeat this for the other three standing triangles.
Step 14
Fold the other three 15×15 cm origami square paper in the same manner above.
Step 15
Take out another 15×15 cm origami square paper, fold it in half horizontally and unfold it.
Step 16
Fold the top and bottom edges to align with the crease you just made, crease them well, and unfold them. Then cut the paper along the middle horizontal crease to get two rectangles.
Step 17
Apply glue to the right side of one of the rectangles and glue the two rectangles together. Finally, fold them horizontally in half.
Step 18
Bend it to form a circle and tuck one of the ends into the other end to fix it.
Step 19
Rotate the bottom two papers 45 degrees counterclockwise.
Step 20
Apply glue to the center part of the top two papers, then place the bottom two papers on them separately and glue them well.
Step 21
Turn over them from left to right.
Step 22
Place the circle on the red combined paper.
Step 23
Glue all of the triangle flaps on the circle.
Step 24
Place it on the yellow combined paper.
Step 25
Similarly, glue all the triangle flaps on the circle.
Instructions – Origami Cake Leaves
Step 1
Take out the 15×15 cm light green paper, fold its right edge toward the right side a little, crease it well, and unfold it, then cut the paper along the crease to get a paper strip.
Step 2
Roll up the strip, apply glue to the end, and stick it on. [Don’t roll it too tightly]
Then rotate it 90 degrees from left to right, and pinch it from the right side to shape it into a teardrop shape.
Step 3
Use light and dark green paper to create three leaves.
Origami Cake Flowers Instructions
Step 1
Another three pieces of 7.5×7.5 cm origami square paper to make the cake flowers.
Take out one of the papers.
Step 2
Fold the bottom right point to meet the top left point, then fold the bottom point to meet the top right point.
Next, cut it along the arc-shaped red dotted line, and finally, unfold the paper.
Step 3
Cut this paper along the red dotted line. The width of the strip you cut should not be too wide.
Step 4
Roll up it from the end at the center, apply glue to the other end, and stick it on, then rotate it 90 degrees from front to back.
Step 5
Create another two flowers in different colors.
Origami Cake Candle – Instructions
Step 1
Another three pieces of 7.5×7.5 cm origami square paper to make the cake candles. It would be best if the colors of the three sheets of paper were the same as the colors we chose to get an origami candle that looks like a real candle.
Take out one of the light yellow one.
Step 2
Fold this paper in half horizontally from bottom to top, then roll it up from the bottom left point, and apply glue at the end to stick it well [don’t forget to apply glue on the bottom layer]
Step 3
Adjust the bottom to make it flat.
Step 4
Fold the remaining two sheets of paper in half vertically from left to right, then cut them along the dotted lines, we only need the cut parts.
Step 5
Unfold the two parts, and place the yellow one on the red one, this is the wick part of the candle.
Step 6
Put the wick part inside the roll you just made.
Origami Cake Birthday Card
Step 1
Take out another piece of 7.5×7.5 cm origami paper and write “Happy Birthday” on it, then cut it down as the pictures show.
Step 2
Flip it over from left to right and fold up its bottom edge a little, then rotate it back.
How to Assemble the Cake
