Material
Prepare a piece of rectangular gum wrapper.

Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Place the paper with the desired display side face up to begin folding. Fold it in half horizontally from bottom to top.

Step 2
Fold down the top edge of the top layer along the horizontal dotted line, leaving a crease, and unfold it. Then, fold the top left and right corners of the top layer diagonally along the dotted lines, and fold down the top edge again.

Step 3
Flip the paper from left to right.

Step 4
Repeat step 2.
Fold down the top edge along the dotted horizontal line, ensuring the newly formed edge aligns with the top edge of the layer beneath. Leave a crease and unfold it. Then, fold the top left and right corners diagonally along the dotted lines, and fold down the top edge again.

Step 5
Fold the paper in half vertically, leaving a crease, and unfold it.

Step 6
Fold the bottom left and right corners diagonally, leaving two creases, and unfold them.

Step 7
Bring up the left edge along the vertical crease for 90 degrees, then open and squash this pocket along the creases you made in the previous step.

Step 8
Flip the paper from left to right.

Step 9
Repeat step 7.
Bring up the left edge along the vertical crease for 90 degrees, then open and squash this pocket along the creases you made in the previous step.

Fold the bottom corner upward to meet the top edge’s midpoint, leaving a crease, and unfold it.

Step 11
Lift the top edge to a 90-degree angle along the horizontal crease you just made. Then, along this crease, fold down the top edge of the front triangle, and fold down the top edge of the triangle on the back side in the opposite direction.

Step 12
Open and squash the right pocket.

Step 13
Open and squash the pocket on the left side.

Mountain fold the center vertical crease.

Step 15
Take the bottom section of the vertical mountain crease, fold it toward the right side along the blue dotted line.

Fold the left wing to the right side along the crease indicated by the dotted line.

Fold the two corners of the butterfly’s abdomen inward to form a neat shape.

Step 18
Spread out this butterfly to see its full shape.

Step 19
Flip the butterfly from left to right, then fold down the top center corner, and flip it back.
