Nick Robinson (born January 8, 1957, in Burnham-on-Sea, England) is Britain’s most prolific origami author and an internationally recognized paper-folding artist. He has beenfolding paper since the early 1980s and has been a member of the British Origami Society for nearly 40 years.
His contributions to the origami community are extensive. He served on the Society’s council for over two decades, edited the bimonthly magazine for nine years, and maintained the website for over 30 years. He has held the position of president and was named an Honorary Member in 2009. In 2004, he received the Sidney French Medal, the Society’s highest honor, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the art of origami.
Robinson’s artistic philosophy emphasizes simplicity and essence over realistic representation. He is particularly drawn to folding containers, masks, and elegant designs that capture subjects with minimal creases. He actively participates in the Folding Didactic movement, which promotes academic study of paper-folding history and effective teaching methods.
His creative achievements are impressive. In 1994, he won three categories in the international Alice in Wonderland origami competition. More than 300 of his original designs have been published in over 18 countries, including Japan, and his work has been featured in prestigious exhibitions worldwide.
As a professional origami educator since the mid-1980s, Robinson has taught extensively across the United Kingdom and internationally. He has worked in schools, libraries, hospitals, art galleries, prisons, and youth clubs. His teaching has taken him to the United States, Japan, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates. His sessions accommodate people of all ages and physical abilities, including visually and hearing-impaired students.
Robinson has written and illustrated over 100 origami books with worldwide sales in the millions. Notable titles include World’s Best Origami (2010), Origami For Dummies (2008), The Origami Bible (2004), and The Complete Book of Origami (2004). His prolific output makes him one of the most published origami authors in Britain.
Beyond traditional origami, Robinson has fulfilled commercial commissions for major organizations. His clients include Google, The Guardian, Penguin Books, Veuve Clicquot, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and Kellogg’s. He has appeared on British and German television and created designs for numerous advertising campaigns.
A former professional musician, Robinson continues his musical career as a solo ambient guitarist performing live looping concerts. He also performs with his band Das Rad, whose second album Adios Al Futuro received critical acclaim.
