If you’ve ever folded a cute little origami animal and discovered it had a secret compartment inside, there’s a good chance you were folding one of Kimura Yoshihisa’s designs. He’s one of Japan’s most prolific and beloved origami creators, and his work has quietly won over paper folders around the world for decades.
Yoshihisa was born in Tokyo in 1959. He got hooked on origami as a fifth grader after picking up Kunihiko Kasahara’s book Origami Suizokukan (Origami Aquarium). That one book changed everything for him. He started folding on his own, experimenting with shapes and structures, and by his teenage years he was already designing original models.
He is a founding member of the Japan Origami Academic Society (JOAS), one of the most respected origami organizations in the world. That’s not just a title on a resume. JOAS has been at the center of serious origami research and artistry in Japan, and Yoshihisa has been part of it from day one.
His work has appeared in numerous publications, including JOAS books and articles in NOA Magazine, the journal of the Nippon Origami Association. His diagrams have also shown up in the OrigamiUSA Convention collections, which is how many Western folders first discovered his designs.
What sets Yoshihisa apart is his love for three-dimensional, functional origami. He doesn’t just make things that look good on a shelf. His signature creations are origami animal boxes, adorable little creatures that double as containers. Think chunky whales, hippos, collies, and elephants, all folded from paper, all hiding a small compartment inside. They’re playful, practical, and wildly charming.
His most well-known book in the English-speaking world is Origami Animal Boxes Kit, published by Tuttle Publishing in 2020. The kit includes step-by-step folding instructions for 14 animal models along with 48 sheets of colorful origami paper. It’s aimed at intermediate folders and has become a fan favorite for its kawaii aesthetic and clever engineering.
Beyond the animal boxes, Yoshihisa is also known for classic designs like the Origami Fairy and the Tortoise Box, both of which have been widely folded and shared in the origami community. According to one of the largest origami databases online, Yoshihisa has 119 documented designs, putting him among the most productive creators in the field.
He has been actively designing origami for more than 40 years and shows no signs of slowing down. For someone who got started as a kid flipping through a library book, that’s a pretty remarkable run.
If you’re looking for origami that’s equal parts cute and clever, Kimura Yoshihisa is a name worth knowing.
