Joseph Hwang

Joseph Hwang is a paperfolding artist based in San Diego, California. His work explores the intersection of mathematical precision and artistic expression through origami.

Hwang specializes in two primary areas: nature-inspired designs and modular origami. He follows traditional origami rules, folding from uncut square sheets without adhesive or cutting.

His artistic philosophy celebrates the hidden beauty of nature through geometric complexity. Each piece represents hours of spatial engineering and design refinement, capturing the essence of his subjects within the paper’s limitations.

Hwang is an accomplished author of three instructional books. Marine Origami (2023) features twenty-six models inspired by coastal marine life. The Art of Modular Origami (2021) explores complex geometric forms built from multiple units. Natural Origami (2020) presents his signature animal designs folded from single squares.

His work has been exhibited throughout San Diego at venues including the San Diego Central Library, Mission Valley Library, and Carmel Valley Library. He has participated in multiple SDAI C-Note exhibitions and group shows like “Eurythmy: The Dance of Colors” at OMA West.
